Twenty four hours after completing Tools of Destruction, I completed Quest for Booty. It’s described to you, the purchaser, with no uncertainty, that Quest for Booty is a short game (originally DLC) which bridges the gap between Tools and the next game A Crack in Time, so the length shouldn’t worry or surprise anyone. My only issue with it is that due to the pricing structure of the local second hand games shop, I paid more for Quest for Booty than I did for its predecessor! Ah well!
In an unusual for me spoiler-moment, I have to mention that storyline-wise Clank is missing and this means there’re no little Clank-chats (or Clank-gadgets) throughout the game. This was the first thing I really noticed; I didn’t realise how much I’d miss the little robot, but I did. In order to make up for his loss, you run through the game with Talwyn, the Tara-Strong-voiced girly whom you meet in the last game. (In a moment of nerdiness, this means you have Tidus’ voice (Ratchet) and Rikku’s voice (Talwyn) with you through the game, very Final Fantasy X!)
So anyway, what’s the game like. I was expecting a few more levels bolted onto the Tools of Destruction engine, but that’s not exactly what you get. Quest for Booty is focussed more around puzzles than killing and doesn’t have the range of weapons, nor the upgrade system, that the previous game had. Consequently, it has a very different feel to it, and what I enjoyed in Tools became a little too repetitive here (namely running along platforms to turn a switch). As the game goes on, it gets a little more like its predecessor, as armies of zombie / ghost pirates come out to get you, but the low powered weapons and lack of certain favourites mean even the combat sections feel a little lax. In short, its not as good as Tools.
That all said, it’s still damned good! The storyline is well paced and fun to follow, with some brilliant cut-scenes and narrative sections from Rusty Pete, the atmosphere and graphics are a little more technically-impressive than the previous game and the game is good enough to not let go for the four hours or so it takes to play through. The end boss gave me a bit of a run for my money too, so there was a little bit of a challenge there. Held on its own, Quest for Booty would be an impressive achievement for anyone, it’s just you don’t hold it on its own as it is unlikely that it is ever played by anyone taken out of context and in context it just isn’t as good as the game it follows. I’m quite pleased that my DLC game has a lovely box, though! Onto the next game now..!
